Recently, Dr. James Funderburgh led a team of researchers that made an astounding discovery – stem cells in the cornea. Since then, they have been refining their techniques and have dedicated themselves to understanding the biological causes for corneal blindness and to developing cell-based therapies for restoration of corneal transparency. So far they have discovered a way to make corneal stem cells repair damaged corneas to state almost indistinguishable from non-damaged corneas in mice. The discovery has opened countless doors to innovations and therapies in eye care that we have only just begun to explore.
