DR. GREGORY T. WOLF RECEIVES 2009 MUSE PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE

In recognition of visionary research, teaching and leadership, the Eye & Ear Foundation presented Gregory T. Wolf, MD with the 2009 Albert C. Muse Prize for Excellence in Otolaryngology on September 17, 2009.  Dr. Wolf, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Michigan, has dedicated a career of more than 25 years to research, education and care in head and neck cancer.

One of Dr. Wolf's most notable accomplishments came as a result of his ground-breaking research into treatment for advanced laryngeal cancer patients.  As lead investigator in clinical trials for the National Veteran's Affairs Cooperative Study for organ preservation, he proved that administering traditional chemotherapy along with radiation therapy could be just as effective as surgery but preserve patients' organs in the process.  These findings were subsequently established as standard of care worldwide to improve quality of care for laryngeal cancer patients.  Dr. Wolf is also renowned for establishing the first International Workshop in the Biology and Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer (which would eventually form the First International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer), serving as the first director of the head and neck oncology program at the University of Michigan, and later serving as Chairman of its Department of Otolaryngology.

The Muse Prize lecture and award ceremonies provided the opportunity for supporters of the Eye & Ear Foundation and professionals in clinical and research areas of otolaryngology in the Pittsburgh region to learn more about this important field of treatment and research.
