Sharing Knowledge with Today’s and Tomorrow’s Practitioners
At the Eye and Ear Institute, the mandate for leadership begins with the education of residents. As part of a world-leading teaching hospital, the Institute’s very mission assumes training of tomorrow’s leaders. In fact, many of today’s department chairs in ophthalmology and otolaryngology education across the U.S. began as residents at the Eye and Ear Institute.
Selection of residents is highly competitive, with more than 500 students applying each year, and about 10 accepted. The training they receive is both rigorous and comprehensive. Faculty members typically have two to three residents at their side, in a setting that combines expert tutelage and hands-on patient care that progresses in responsibility each year. By the end of their residencies, they have touched the lives of thousands of patients. Whether the educational setting is a delicate surgery on a woman’s vocal chords in a state-of-the-art operating room, or a comprehensive exam of a young child’s vision with a mobile eye team that travels to area neighborhoods, the operating principles are the same: The Institute’s faculty and residents are meticulous in practice and steadfast in their commitment to extending the reach of our knowledge and the impact of our care. Yet, the mission also extends to the far reaches of the world, whether it is to perform triaged procedures in the depth of a jungle, or to give young leaders in emerging countries the opportunity to train side-by-side with some of the world’s best. The faculty at Eye and Ear Institute are committed to training the next generation of leaders wherever they may begin and to continually heightening the standards of care. Frequently, Institute faculty are called on to contribute their findings to the medical literature, to serve as editors to the most respected journals and to speak at national and international conferences. |
