World-Leading Research
EEI is leading a new era of medicine that combines research and clinical care in a real-time fashion that informs patient care with the latest advances and brings the human reality of disease into the labs.
Many of today’s advanced medical achievements and practices in ophthalmology and otolaryngology can be traced to the research labs of the Eye and Ear Institute. Some of our current research efforts include: Identifying genetic markers for head and neck cancer and developing targeted therapies to curtail its development; Using virtual reality technology to treat balance disorders caused by anxiety or middle ear problems; Developing tools to help doctors see resolutions of the eye at three microns—smaller than a blood cell but a view that’s critical for early diagnosis and treatment; Working with the University of Pittsburgh’s world-class bioengineering program to develop a cornea, suitable for transplantation, from a patient’s own stem cells.
