Campbell Trust grant funds next generation of diagnostic technology
The Charles T. Campbell Trust at National City Bank has awarded a grant of $80,000 to the Eye & Ear Institute to fund the next generation of Ocular Coherence Technology (OCT). Under the direction of Joel S. Schuman, M.D., Professor and Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology, Director of UPMC Eye Center, Professor of Bioengineering, the Ophthalmology Department has been working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts University School of Medicine on these new tools that can help doctors see resolutions of the eye at three microns—that’s smaller than a blood cell but a view that’s critical for early diagnosis and treatment, particularly for macular degeneration and glaucoma.
The very generous late Charles T. and Estelle Campbell, a well-loved board member of the Eye & Ear for many years, started and named the Eye and Ear Institute’s world-renowned Charles T. Campbell Ophthalmic Microbiology Lab. Mr. Campell was a Pittsburgh captain of industry in the river transportation business.
